Drumming as a Survival Tool

Drumming as a Survival Tool

by

Russell Buddy Helm

As life throws challenges at us, we must come up with solutions quickly. We must improvise. Or succumb to the temptation to give up. In drumming we create a model of continuity and progress that is based on this recurring DOWNBEAT. That is the anchoring note, the repeating, comforting cornerstone for civilization and love. Without the combined force of the group downbeat there is no community. On an individual level the ongoing downbeat is a comfort. It is knowing that even when we miss one of the downbeats, there will be another coming along just when we need it. It is steady, repetitive and consistent Everyone gets lost but we get back on the downbeat and we feel better-connected, in control.

In sharing the groove with a friend or even a stranger we exchange energies that are far more profoundh than words. We share fait, hope, love and creativity. Even Divine inspiration. This comes about not from playing correct notes learned in an intellteuwal way but playing from our hearts.

When our lives are challenged and we falter, the act of hitting a drum in a hopeful way renews our faith in life and belief that everything will work out fine. It gives us hope in an instant. Mysterious as it is, the sensation is there.

Codependent drumming

Codependent drumming.

Yep! It’s here! Ladies and gentlemen…When a person hits the drum too soon for the downbeat- that’s codependent behavior. If the person is aggressively ignoring other drummers- you guessed it. When the person is too “altered” to realize they are being a jerk. If someone is a acting like a Djembe Cowboy- they are codependent. Scared little boys make a whole lot of noise. Creating or finding a safe space and nurturing it is important for the well being of the planet. Creating a coherent energy filed by using the downbeat as a gentle focus creates a powerful medium for changing other energy fields.

Here is a current healing drumming meditation workshop at Seasons in Santa Monica, CA.

Needless to say these events are profoundly fun, healing and inspiring. Come one, Come all. Share the groove and enjoy your own sense of rhythm.

Also from a clinical point of view, we can see how rhythm is the basic language of our humanity.

And it can change reality. Rhythm is reality.

Jam with Charlie DeChant in Orlando

This has been a great tour. I am on my way down to Lake Worth now from Orlando. I jammed with Charlie Dechant last night. We saw each other in L.A. on Thursday. He arrived dto do the Hollywood Bowl with Hall n Oates playing with the LA. Philharmonic. I missed the show because I went out on this tour. But He is back in Orlando and we got together last night.

So here is the youtube of what we improvised.

“Bring it to me” Tour July 2011

Tonight I am leaving Santa Monica for a ten day tour in Florida.

The “Bring it to me” tour.

When I realized that rhythm was a healing tool and a tool to expand consciousness in almost anyone, I decided to go on tour to test my theories in the “real” world. i.e. outside of L.A. But the reality is that the concepts came together  on the road just as much as at Seasons in Santa Monica over the last twenty years. The HelmTone protocols evolved out of these tours and the home based workshops and individual sessions. Everyone has contributed insight into how the rhythms create wellness, integration, manifesting, wisdom, power, balance and joy and happiness.

So this tour I am honored to perform at the Unity Church in St. Petersburg, Florida. Rev. Hayes and Jeff Snyder musical dir. have fit me in once again into the busy schedule. We will drum Friday night at the Rhythm Rally which is a hoot. It’s a bargain too. Donations. We have a small fire outside under a canopy. A good sound system and complete permission to take the audience anywhere in the universe we want to go. The drumming is groove personified and the inspiration is exhalted. I can’t  say enough about theses groups. They are so fine.

Saturday I will be at the Longhouse in Gulfport at 3pm. These groups have been going on for several years and are high quality trances. This is also a Buddhist center and body /energy working center.

Sunday I will do the Church services in the morning then a 3 oclcok healing drum circle in the church. I am looking forward to this because this is the first time we are doing the healing “Circle of Souls” in the Church itself. This is a profound healing event!

Then Wednesday I will be at the Center for wellness in Orlando( the Co-op). Emily and Michael are doing great community work and supporting a large group of healers and doers in their town. They have hosted me for many years.

Then I will be in Boynton Beach on Thursday night at the Crystal Garden, I like this place. Very intimate and spiritual. Nice group of people and open to the energy flows.

Friday night we are kicking out the jams in Lake Worth at Greg’s house starting at about 7 or so. That is also a a donation of $10. This is my favorite group. Totally on the groove drummers and dancers galore. These people have a drumming community that is connected, cooperative and swinging. They appreciate what I am offering.

Saturday night I am at the Goddess Store in Hollywood, Florida This a new venue set up by Mark Richards in Miami. I have heard about this place. There is plenty of room for dancing!!!

Sunday afternoon we are doing a trance meditation groove workshop at 3 at Mark Richard’s house in Coral Gables. These remind me of the old days in Coconut Grove- circa: 1969. Tropical, sensual, loving and fun.

Then I drive back up to Tampa. Drop the drums off at the Longhouse, (in case you want to buy one)

Then I fly back to L.A. on Monday night.

Then Tuesday night we are back on schedule at Seasons drumming on Tuesday and Friday at 7 and Sunday and 3.

We are opening a new drumming venue in Santa Monica that can handle more people. The Wellness Living Store on Fourteenth St.

Rhythm n Blues as healing Grooves

American R n B grooves are a source of healing energy for the body and the mind. They are simplifications of classical African, European folk, Spanish, Indian, Eastern, etc. Pre-drum machine. Al Green, Otis, Wilson, Aretha, Marvin. The magical organic grooves of their music loosened up our rigid Eisenhower era minds and bodies, and with the help of the hula hoop, the kundalini was awakened in our tribe. Capturing those grooves on the djembe is a real kick and insightful too. Drummers see the music when people dance and move to a groove. Sustainable grooves are  relaxed and egoless. Good for healing trance.  Re-discovering our own grooves.

The Great Secret

1986. Sitting in my office at Lorimar Telepictures. Culver City, L.A. Post Production supervisor; Dallas, Knotts Landing, Falconcrest, Hunter, etc. A good looking woman walks into my office and smiles: “You don’t know who I am.” She says. “I do know who you are.” I said. “You are a film inspector.” She nodded, ‘I am also a spy for the front office. They like you, they don’t want you leave. They know you are planning on quitting. They want to make you a vice president.” She smiled again.

“I have to leave.” I said.

“Why?” She says.

“Cause I just received some bootleg tapes of my drumming with Tim Buckley from his widow, from back in the Seventies and it’s really good.”

Her dark eyes lit up. “You  are a drummer?”

Back then it was dangerous to admit that I was a drummer. People mistrusted the idea of drummers in the high end corporate film industry. “Yeah. I was.”

“We knew you were different. You could dance- when we had the buy-out party from Turner on the lot. Where did you grow up?

“All over, last place was Miami. I played the drumset, congas, ”

“Are you a Congero?

“Si. y Timbalero.”

She smiled “Lets go dancing some time.”

“I’d like that a lot. But I’m still leaving Lorimar. I have to go back to playing the drums- or something connected with music. I don’t know what.”

“Good luck Mr. Helm. I’ll miss you.”

Then the life path grew very steep. It took years to understand what kind of drumming I was supposed to be doing. Because it did not exist back then. There were no shamanic drummers working with communities and groups. There was primarily pop music. And Jazz. That’s it. So I decided to do something foolhardy but necessary, teach groove meditation drumming. It was different than anything else. It was not music. it was more important than that. Creating it out of thin air.

When I realized that was my secret, then everything else got easier.
