No ‘ear’ for rhythm?

Hello Buddy,

“Do you think that rhythm can be taught to someone with virtually no ‘ear’ for it? I come from a musical family so I just got lucky that way, and can help if that’s what it takes, but while i can teach salsa steps all day, I don’t know how to teach such a basic idea as ‘listen and move to the beat’.

There’s no hurry on this, but I have immense respect for you as a gentle and effective teacher, and I know you have run into this sort of thing. How much potential for improvement is there in someone with no natural ear, and how, if at all, can I help him?

The distractions that interfere with a person trying to feel their own sense of rhythm are a result of trauma – usually. The steady gentle slow downbeat in the middle of the drumhead is the safest way for them to recalibrate their sense of rhythm that has been dislocated. Set up two drums, hit just the low middle downbeat tone at a medium tempo, with a soft high note at the edge, repeat steady for fifteen minutes or more slow it down until your friend starts to FEEL the concept of a steady pulse. This is something I deal with a lot. There is psychological processing that accompanies this miraculous event. Be gentle and non judgemental. Let me know. I have CDs.

Recovery drumming

I have had the honor of being asked to work with a very distinguished recovery organization here in Santa Monica. It is rewarding and enlightening work. I show up with 6 of my sacred blessed djembes master-carved in Ghana and we drum softly and meditatively for an hour. The results are exciting and profound. I have met a number of interesting people who are staying in these very nice homes for a month of recovery and rest. They are often times shy about hitting the drum or they are unsure of their own skill, or they are put off by the sound but in the end the nurturing downbeat soothes their soul and they are brought into a state of grace that heals their soul and their minds. Healing with others sharing the downbeat grooves is a great way of making a difference in the world.

El Dorado Cadillac

Just another cool day at Seasons in Santa Monica. This El Dorado Cadillac cruised up and parked. Of course two cool people got out and had cool lunch. His hair matched the silver color tones of his Cadillac. Pinstriped eyeballs. She was a cougar.

Guro Dan Inosanto(Bruce Lee’s partner) drumming in Seasons in Santa Monica

Guro Dan Inosanto just strolled into the the Shop Sunday and we drummed. He is featured in all of Bruce lee’s movies and is considered the greatest martial arts teacher in the world. Inosanto Martial Arts Academy has turned out exceptional world champions in all forms of martial arts and he has taught every movie star how to punch and kick and take a hit as well as training the NAVY SEALS, Special Operations CIA, SWAT. He is the most gracious man I have ever met. He has been my drum student for more than ten years but it is I who is learning.
