2001. Paralounge is a drumming festival in northern Florida and they contacted me to come and give a drumming meditation seminar at a place called Spirit of Suwannee in the middle of nowhere. Two interstates crossed at this juncture; I10 which is the same freeway that goes all the way to Santa Monica, California and ends at our store, Seasons on Montana Avenue. The other interstate is I95 that goes from Miami to New York. The land is flat, fertile and fecund. Universities hover close by and the locals are true crackers; cowboys and farmers, but with the threat of encroaching gentrification. The site was very nice; a park dedicated to music, canoeing and camping. The crowd was your basic hippie/New Agers with a friendly mix of good ol’ boys. The promoters were husband, wife and little daughter, with good intentions and a pretty good sense of how to run a festival, considering it wasn’t that big, yet. I returned to this festival for many years and did my version of a drumming group which was not the usual banging. I was intent on showing the drummers how to maintain a trance groove and how to support the sacred dancers with a safe space. The grooves I used were generic and simple but the long improvisations created a great mystical communion. I felt like this was a good direction for the new drumming consciousness to pursue otherwise it would just be egotistical banging and top dog mentality. The night time fire circle drumming got wild and I would try for a bit to get into it but I decided to let the young bloods have their fun. I was not going to compete with the eager high energy guys, but with Jana and all the other teachers helping we influenced the circle and helped to create a coherency in their drumming. There were a few attitudes that had to get readjusted, and we all commiserated on how to engender cooperation amongst the drummers. It was a growing experience for all the people and I enjoyed contributing to the evolution of sacred drumming in our culture. The eagerness of the large drumming groups attending my meditation workshops gave me a unique energetic boost into the trance, singing, talking, and drumming. Once, I was so deeply in trance I heard my own voice saying, “We would like to thank Buddy for letting us use his body and his voice for this sacred drumming…” I opened my eyes and looked at the throng of drummers under the Florida cypress trees, while I was still in a strange suspended animation. People came up to me, stood around talking quietly, asking questions, buying my CDs and books, but I felt that something unusual had happened. They were treating me like I was a visiting entity, or an extraterrestrial.

I was absorbing orgone energy at an incredible rate; the word coined by Dr. Wilhelm Reich to describe the life force. It was being generated in the drumming groups and was stimulating me in ways that we have no words for in our modern culture. I had read Dr. Reich’s lab reports back in nineteen seventy when I lived in Coconut Grove and recognized his description of the sensations of orgone saturation. The feeling seemed similar to Dr. Wilhelm Reich’s descriptions he had in some of his lab entries. He was in an elevated state. Not really euphoric; but a higher sense of immediacy and well being, mixed with his urgency about this discovery. He wrote that his staff, isolated on an Army base in Virgina, all survived the flu epidemics killing thousands across the country. He realized that he had found a way to increase the life force in human beings resulting in good health, mental clarity and higher functioning. A sense of higher purpose became stronger and stronger as I continued to tour around the country and drum at various venues. After the tours were finished I would get back to Santa Monica and sort of crash. The elevation of these tours kept me in that exalted state. I didn’t want to come down from that high consciousness that was propelled by the group drumming and the good intentions. This was an unexpected facet of the drumming tours I had to take a look at it. It was seductive much like the old days when I would get off tour with Tim Buckley and crash from the level of excitement back down into a normal existence. It was one of the reasons I distrusted touring with rock n roll; it would become addictive in itself, even without drugs and booze. Now with the drumming workshops,   II got so energized by everyone’s love and  drumming I could see and do things that were outside of the norm. I was feeling very psychic and atuned to cosmic forces, like a yogi. The healing energies were coming through me. People were getting better. I focused on bringing reiki energy into people’s bodies and minds to heal their conditions. I was getting testimonials that this was working for them. I was not the healer here, it was this energy that we were generating; the healing power of God, of love, of rhythm. I created “Circle of Souls” where the clients would lay inside the circle of drummers, and we would sing, focusing healing rhythm and song into them. People couldn’t get enough of this vibrational healing. This exalted state is a challenging state of mind.  I have seen rock stars get taken over by delusional behavior after they experience thousands of adoring people night after night. At the same time, my one on one private healing sessions with people were generating palpable positive results. I could feel something, a presence, an energy form that we did not have a vocabulary for…yet. People were telling me that their conditions had improved. I was not interested in being a shaman. I wanted to keep it simple and neat; I was a drum teacher; showing the people how to generate healing sacred energy in their own groups. I wanted others to be the shamans, not me. I slowly came to see that my reasons for touring extensively were more complex than I had initially thought. I was still touring with Tim Buckley in my heart; looking for him, his soul, his voice, in all these strange venues where I was performing.  I also missed Christian and the Bethlehem Asylum’s music. I hoped that the drumming would lead me back to the music. The profound meaning I was looking for was actually right in front of me; I was inundated with it. I wasn’t really hearing the miraculous stories of healing and spiritual awakening that was a result of this drumming. I was stuck in the past of my own making; I felt mired in regret because of the near hits and misses of the music business. I missed the forest for the trees. I was comparing my own accomplishments to friends and partners that had gone on to become greater in my eyes than what I was doing. But there was a voice, an honest voice in my heart, “You are doing something important. It is OK to feel good about yourself and what you are doing. It is helping people.” When I felt the depression after coming down from the tours I reminded myself that I was worthwhile. The constant reinforcement from friends and colleagues helped me overcome the sense of futility that I was fighting. I finally came to realize that my belief system was working in reverse. The more successful I became, the worse I felt. It was complicated but I understood; it had been an evolution from my childhood. My mother had admonished me in a well intentioned strategy to keep me safe; “Just stay invisible. Don’t stand out and get the attention of “them”; the men in black suits. She was afraid of the people that my father had been involved with. When they did come after me, I couldn’t tell her for fear of really getting her worried. I tried to deal with this mystery myself. The real mystery was the effects of this stress from childhood on my adult life. I was not allowing myself to be who I could be. This was also a condition for a lot of people; we restrict ourselves. So I had to create a drumming protocol that would save my own life. I started to drum with affirmations. This initially came out of drumming groups where people were saying things like: “I can’t drum.” or “I have no sense of rhythm.” while they were actually drumming! There was a disconnect between the critical mind and the body. I suggested to them to say, “I AM drumming!” while they were hitting the drum to overcome the overstimulated Inner Critic. That is when I realized that the critical mind does not understand rhythm, but you can use rhythm to control the critical mind and change the belief system.

“I have anger issues” he said quietly

“I have anger issues.” He said quietly.

2013. We were drumming, facing each other in a small alcove overlooking a pleasant canyon backyard garden. He seemed to be a normal looking middle aged Anglo man. He had checked himself into this recovery facility and was getting very good care from a professional staff of therapists, nutritionists, meditation teachers, etc. He was drumming because he was desperate to find a solution to his condition; his family, his job, his life was at stake. I suggested he continue to hit just the downbeat in a repetitive, relaxed manner while he talked about anything; the weather, his past. The drumming of the downbeat opens up the unconscious and allows it to speak truthfully.

“I was severely beaten as a child by my father, at my mother’s request.”  He said with almost a sense of shame. I let him continue while I maintained a steady relaxed tempo, keeping the deep downbeat tone moving into his body and mind. He continued to talk until he just grew quiet, yet still kept the downbeat going. I suggested we do the inner child drumming mantra; “You’re safe with me, now.” We said this in unison, while hitting the downbeat. I gradually slowed the tempo down to a crawl; about twenty beats a minute. He got tears in his eyes and I suggested he let himself cry. A few tears came up but he was also perspiring heavily. It was a lot of emotional work. “Just keep hitting the downbeat.” I suggested, and he drummed through the thoughts that were coming up. He seemed to be getting through it.

The inner child is very worldly; he or she has heard all the psychobabble; ‘talk is cheap’. They are still stuck in their situation. The inner child is a hero, they are “holding off the bad guys” and are forced to create a split in their young being, telling their fractured selves something like; “You get out of here. Go live your life. Grow up and forget about me. I have to stay here and hold off the bad guys. Now get out of here while you can!” The gentle drumming creates a bridge back to our inner child, where we can reunite with our innocent earlier selves and gain the gifts that our child has been holding onto; love, awe, happiness, creativity, trust, joy, fun. In return, our adult selves can take care of the child. It is a bonding between two halves of our selves that I have witnessed many times and it still brings tears to my eyes.

“Thank you. You have opened up a new door for me.” He said. He left and said that he would email me about his progress. But like most of the people I work with, I never hear from them again.  Once in a while I will get a great response, and that helps many other people too. It is an ongoing therapy; an evolution of consciousness. The results are what counts.

Los Muneguitos were performing in LA

excerpt: “History of the Groove, drummer’s story”

1997. Los Munegutios were performing in LA. It was a rare opportunity to see this great musical treasure from Cuba. They had about six drummers, five singers, and about five dancers. They sang the traditional Santeria songs and improvised amazing drumming and vocal arrangements that sent chills up my spine. They are authentic and have been performing since nineteen fifty four. They are from the Matanzas province and are considered world class in presenting the sacred Afro Cuban drumming music. The crowd was entirely Hispanic and African American. There was one other white man there who I knew had drummed with Baba Olatunji. Cathy wore a beautiful green burnt velvet dress and I had on green suede hush puppies I had bought on South Beach on our last trip down to Miami. The whole concert hall was a party with important people in the Santeria Community meeting and greeting. There was a palpable air of magic over the whole crowd. The queen of the Latin magic community ended up sitting next to us and she had on a burnt green shawl that was identical to Cathy’s; only Cathy had the whole ensemble and it made her look look like the real queen of the night. The Latin Voodoo queen took it as an insult and spent the whole night trying to irritate Cathy by holding her baby up and getting him to kick Cathy in the arm. Her husband finally traded seats with her to try to focus on the incredible music and dancing. Nobody liked the fact that I was there. The crowd was very possessive of their magical music and did not want an Anglo taking part. Delicious authentic Cuban food was served out front of the Wilshire Ebell theater. There were even Cohibas available to purchase from a very discreet Cuban gentleman. I was enjoying the music, the sacred singing and dancing but I was on my guard to some extent. I tried not to let it interfere with our good time. At the end of the concert, the players on stage asked for people to come up on stage and dance with them. Cathy insisted that we go up on stage. I did not want to but she insisted, so there we were up in front of this crowd dancing and clapping. I was watching the old drummers teaching the young drummers how to stay steady and work the grooves that created the magical trances. I watched the old man singer clapping his hands to the clave rhythm. I tried to match him but I could not, which really puzzled me. The clave was a rhythmic pattern that I knew something about but he was doing something different to the three/two rhythmic structure and it was just slightly off from what I could clap. I couldn’t get it.  As we left, the LA gangs were assembled in the parking lot and made remarks as we passed through them.

“Did you hear what they said?” Cathy asked me after we had gotten through.

“No.” I said not looking back. “I’m deaf.”

“Good.” She said. “The chica said…but she has a nice dress.”

The next day I went to a special drumming seminar with the Munequitos drummers in a strange warehouse district in an art gallery for Latin black magic artwork. The drummers were assembled in the gallery and a small crowd was gathering around them. The owner of the gallery looked me up and down and charged me double. I grabbed three plastic chairs to sit behind the crowd and still see the drummers. They were not smiling. This was serious magical drumming. They didn’t give me a second look, but the witch from the night before was there and she did not like me attending this sacred drumming event. She sent her assistant over to me and asked for a chair. I gave her one of my chairs then got another one from the stack. The witch came over to me and hissed at me.

“You have to go!”

“I’m here for the drum.” I said simply. She screamed at me in a hiss that got the drummer’s attention but they didn’t stop playing a groove that was thick and dark, weaving around the room like a huge black python. Her frizzy black hair was flying in all directions and her crazy eyes were like a mother barracuda I had met once off of Big Pine Key about twenty feet down. She didn’t really scare me that much, which really pissed her off.

“What are you? The chair cop?” I said. Her tattooes of pentagrams and voodoo markings danced on her chest as she hissed at me. I ignored her and she stomped away. I focused on the drummers. She didn’t scare me. When I had gone after these rhythms while living in Coconut Grove back in the day, I found myself looking down the barrel of a forty five automatic pistol and the Cuban with his finger on the trigger, calling me, “Goddam hippie.” This time I was determined to get the sacred magical grooves.

I felt protected. The drum I was playing belonged to Guro Dan Inosanto; Bruce Lee’s partner. It was full of his Chi. He was my student and his energy was like the Dalai Lama. I knew that the drum had always protected me. It was an understanding that went all the way back to when I was facing the real danger of being recruited by the CIA when I was nineteen. The woman who had recruited me gave me a gift, a ring, It was set with a sardonyx stone carved into a royal signet stamp that she had gotten in Iran back when the Shah was sitting on the Peacock throne. She told me, “Wear this ring and you will be safe as long as you play the drums.” I did wear it until I accidentally hit it on the rim of my tom tom during a Bethlehem Asylum concert in Miami and it splintered the stone. This was after she had tried to get me to commit to working undercover for the CIA in the anitwar movement in nineteen sixty nine. When the ring broke, I worried about it. Then I took it off and I felt a whole lot better. I felt that the drum had freed me from her emotional blackmail.

“This drumming was outlawed in Cuba until only recently. If a drummer was caught playing these rhythms they would be put in jail. So the drummers got fish boxes and played them instead. That is how these sacred rhythms survived in Cuba.” The African Cuban instructor explained.

I watched intently as the three drummers each played their parts together. They did not smile. This was not entertainment. This was sacred and ancient; a mix of Catholic and Yoruba imagery in a secret society that had survived for hundreds of years in Cuba. They were still protecting it. Finally, I was seeing the combination of rhythms that I could not get the night before. They were playing the clave in a six beat pattern, not the conventional four beat pattern! Suddenly the whole world of Afro Cuban sacred drumming made sense to me. I had been trying to hear it in four beat patterns while they were actually playing in six beat patterns. It excited me more than anything else I have experienced in a long time. The owner of the gallery came up to me.

“You have to leave…now” He said and slid me my money so that no one would see it.

Outside, loading Guro Dan’s conga drum into my van, an old pick up truck arrived and a black man got out. He was walking with a cane. He was my age and his injury looked old. He was probably a Viet Nam combat veteran. He gave me a heads up as he loaded his conga drum onto a dolly with some effort.

“You’re leaving. Is it crowded in there?” He asked me with genuine friendliness.

“It’s not for white people.”

He looked shocked. “No…”

“Then you tell me what it is, man. ”

“Sorry that happened.”

“Just don’t sit on more than one chair.” I said and drove away. I got what I wanted; the mystical clave patterns in a six beat pattern were the missing secret ingredients to the newly evolving healing drum therapy that I was working on. It would have been a good idea for the witch to let me have them. If my people get better, then their people would benefit. I understood what they were trying to protect. This is a new day though, and the secrets of spirit and healing are now in the open. We are all sharing the groove now.

“I don’t have any rhythm” is an inaccurate self description

“I don’t have any rhythm” is an inaccurate self description

excerpt; “History of the Groove, drummer’s tale” Russell Buddy Helm ©2013 all rights reserved

“I don’t have any rhythm” is an inaccurate self description; what is really happening is that our sense of rhythm has been dislocated. It is there but it is in a state of shock. All we have to do is bring it back into alignment and we will have a perfect sense of rhythm. It will be our own sense of rhythm. Each of us has a unique sense of rhythm. It is as individual as our fingerprints. The concept of the downbeat is how we can all player together. We can agree on at least one note; the anchor note, the beginning of the phrase. The downbeat played in the middle of the drum head,, hitting it evenly with alternating hands reestablishes a steady rhythm in our belief system. Everybody’s sense of rhythm is unique; like a fingerprint, so don’t compare. The intellectual mind constantly replays trauma, stress, illness, injury, abuse, fear in a well meaning attempt to prevent us from repeating those tragic events. This process in our intellect is well intentioned but it is overstimulated; from the environment, technology, media, modern life. So it is driving us crazier by replaying our history, reminding us of what to avoid. These repetitive loops of memory can be completely distracting and prevent us from being present in the moment. The drum and soothing rhythms can override those dysfunctional grooves with a healthy, confident groove that is life affirming. This repatterning occurs below the awareness of the intellect because we are centered in the body, feeling the rhythm. The intellect does not understand the effect of rhythm on the belief system; that is why commercials have soundtracks. The intellect can be convinced using rhythm.  We can repeat affirmations, or releases to inculcate these new positive concepts into our belief system. It only takes a minute; one minute, for the belief system to take on a new concept. That is why commercials are sixty seconds long. Advertisers have done the research. So with drumming as a therapy we can take back our own sense of rhythm and use it to power our own life affirming agenda.
