Harry Nilson was a grand song writer; vivid and detailed in his prose and melody. His outstanding musical opera was an animated full length feature about a pointless headed child born into a pointed culture. HIs only friend was his dog Arrow. Hence the hit single and why this song is stuck in my Jukebox Brain. My friend Phillip commuted from L.A. to Kabul, Afganistan during the Hippie Trail years before Russian occupation. He imported Persian Rugs, Samovars, jewelery and maybe some Hash. I rented a room from him in his Temescal Canyon hillside Malibu home. The main trekking item that he packed was a cassette recorder with his personally transferred copy of “The Point” Harry Nilson’s operatic masterpiece that had many great musicians playing on the tracks. But limitations of the Seventies era tape cassette technology was the limited recording time on a cassette which left the last song on albums halfway completed on the portable cassette recording. Phillip arrived somewhere near the Kyber Pass outside of Kabul, Afganistan standing in front of a rickety opium den, with camels tied up. He entered into the group of local Mujahadeen bandits who were all smoking opium while contemplating a poster on the back of the rickety door of Disneyland showing the magic Kingdom castle. A gift from a former client. He settled in and commenced to listen to his cassette recording of “The Point” while a toothless bandit translated to the opium induced group of musket and sword carrying warriors. They were all hanging on every word of their translator until the tape ran out in the middle of the last song which was the conclusion of Nilson’s opus story. They were sorely offended that this American hippie had treked across the world to play this rude trick on all of them, They decided to kill him. Phillip managed to get out the door. He did escape and that is why I tell this story. But on his subsequent trip he was captured and swept up in the Russian Army’s advance.. I was on tour but my manager’s office received a transatlantic call asking for help but it was too late. Phillip was nowhere to be found. Harry Nilson and John Lennon got thrown out of the Troubadour for being drunk and offensive. Phillip never came home.

For what it’s Worth
Steven Stills was one more extremely talented musician composer from the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Genius or maybe the water. This song was recorded by Buffalo Springfield back in the mid Sixties. “Stop, Hey what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going round.” An anthem of the times and an echo through my JukeBox Brain.
That band spawned many great groups and songs but Steven had to get started first.
Back at Plant High school he was as desperate as the rest to get going with something meaningful yet cool. He put a band together. But the politics and the culture prevented anything that was out of the mainstream. He needed a McGuffin; a gimmick. Hair was an important part of self identity. Young men letting their hair grow out was a political statement. It meant a rejection of status quo and became a personal confrontation to conservative agenda. It was resistance to the Viet Nam War. It was a lot of things. It was a symbol of the future. Especially in The Deep South where it could get you killed. High school administration forbade long hair in the schools upon penalty of suspension or worse. There was one former alumni who was of a like mind as Steven. He could not play a note on any instrument but he had hair. Long beautiful flowing hair. The band wasn’t that good but they hung a bass guitar on their new compatriot and placed him at the front of the stage so that all the girls could see him. To play it safe they didn’t even plug his bass into an amplifier. It didn’t matter. The girls liked them. They were a hit. A few years later Steven was in California sitting on the grass in Mama Cass’s Laurel Canyon front yard overlooking Hollywood far down below and he played his songs for the people; David Crosby, Graham Nash, and few others soon to create the first super group. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. For What it’s Worth was still worth quite a bit.
Give me a head with hair…

Light My Fire
Enough has been written about The Doors already. But the history of Jim Morrison is always fodder for rock scribes. We both got our starts in a dinky mildewed coffee house in Pinellas Park Florida; a suburb of St. Petersburg on the gulf coast of Tampa Bay. The Beaux Arts Coffee House was run by a veteran dancer from Balanchin’e troupe in New York. Tommy’s mother would sit at the front screen door of the antibellum Tenne…

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
The Allman Brothers will always have a place of honor in my JukeBox Brain. My band Bethlehem Asylum was fortunate enough to open for the original Allmans on numerous occasions in the South when we were all getting started. The cemetary in Macon, Georgia was hallowed ground. Elizabeth Reed’s headstone marked a spiritual commitment to the music. The shimmering guitar duets accompanied by Gregg’s masterful vo…

In the Midnight Hour
It is midnight and I can’t sleep because WIlson Pickett is running my Jukebox Brain all on his own. How many times I have played this song is impossible to count. I recall smokey blue light bar rooms and giant stages with hundreds of adoring people all moving and groovin’ to this tune. If there was a fight breaking out on the dance floor Midnight Hour was the tune that de-escalated the confrontation. It is a love…

Born to Be Wild
John Kay and his band Steppenwolf growling out lyrics about motorcycles. This song was an anthem in its time. It played on the sound track for Easy Rider, and functioned as a wet dream for every kid who could not afford a Harley Davidson pan head hog with an extended front end. Damn hard to steer those things. The outlaw hero as outlaw was the character in the movie made by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. It had a big …

Yesterday I woke up with Grace Slick wailing in my head, in front of an on-fire band. Jorma, Jack, Paul, Marty and Spencer on drums. Me and My Arrow
