Lookin for the Heart of Saturday Night
Tom Waits’ first album. It was a song I loved and should have covered it with Tim Buckley, they were on the same label. I was unsure of my producing chops. Don’t ever doubt yourself when it comes to being creative. No one will know how unsure you were. This song is plaintiff. It is wistful about the endless search for romance. Tom Waits is a great talent and a perceptive poet. And he is funny too. When I was drumming with Tim Buckley in the early 70’s we were touring and recording and I felt that I had found a home. Then Tim died and I was without someone to play drums for. He had an amazing voice but we play the cards we are dealt. Tom sums sums up that forlorn emptiness in this song. It is a hit that never made it.
