Careless Whisper

Careless Whisper
George Michael

“I’m never gonna dance again. Guilty feet got no rhythm.” He was puzzled why this song became so popular. He penned it when he was 17 and admittedly had little experience with relationships let alone infidelity and breaking up. But such is the nature of art. It resonates even without knowing why. My JukeBox brain stubbornly replays this song over and over again. It is a complete perfect production and an immediate earwig hook. I don’t really consider it a great song. Neither did George. But it seems to be the theme song for dysfunctional relationships. Mysterious minor chord patterns may be part of the chemistry. George’s vocal delivery is masterful but it dredges up sad memories and broken dreams for many folks. It is not a conventional blues vehicle for George and it hints at more sophisticated issues, deeper than the usual regrets. I respect the song’s power and influence, I just wish it would go away.
