    Kookie Burns

Back when I was a preteen a popular TV show featured detectives or something based on a club at 77 Sunset Strip in distant California. The theme song was catchy but the real draw was the club’s car parking valet; Ed “Kookie” Burns. He had a pompadour hair-do stacked up glistening with oil. He was a good looking chap and always had a swagger and a posed hair combing moment in every episode. I remember the theme song had two finger snaps as part of the tune but Kookie had his own theme song that got some heavy radio airplay; “Kookie, Lend me your comb” sung by a trio of girls. He was a pre Beatles heartthrob. When i finally reached Hollywood the first tourist attraction was 77 Sunset Strip. The address was still intact on the wall next to the carport but there wasn’t much allure to the place. So much for American heritage real estate. Suffice it to say that my JukeBox brain seized on the number 77 since today is my 77th birthday and it pulled up the theme song which is now running roughshod through my mind until something else takes its place. The next top was Griffith observatory parking lot where James Dean had his knife fight in “Rebel without a Cause.”
